I Saw An Ocean
I was visiting a friend in Denver, Colorado. He was driving on the freeway, I forget which one, maybe 76.
We were coming over a gentle rise, the light golden and hazy. The road unspooled before us and in the distance, the land faded gold to shimmering silver. I couldn’t tell where the land ended and the sky began.
As I gazed into the distance I forgot where I was for a moment.
I saw an ocean.
Look! I said, leaning forward in the car and turning towards my friend. Do you see it? Do you see an ocean?
He didn’t turn his head, but he smiled and said nothing for a moment, looking at what was probably sunlight dancing off the glassy downtown acres.
Yeah, he said. I see it. I see an ocean.
