My UN-Doing

Published by MsQ at 9:01 pm under General

I had to fill out this form. It had many checkboxes. The checkboxes gave me several choices with which to categorize myself.

I was struck with the power Of UN.

UN. Prefix. Used to add the meaning ‘not‘, ‘lacking‘ or ‘the opposite of‘ before adjectives, adverbs, verbs and nouns.

The context was my marital status. That is:

Was I married or had I been married?

I really didn’t see the pertinence of this question with respect to the form and its associated legal document.

HOWEVER, since it was for a legal document I figured I had better put the correct answer.

OK, so, no on Married or HAD BEEN Married.

This made me wonder, if I had been married, that is, divorced, would I be divorced?

There wasn’t a checkbox for “Divorced.”

I pondered this. I could figure out my designation, my category, my particular checkbox. There weren’t all that many choices. BUT, the available checkboxes made me wonder.

I looked up from the form and asked, “If I HAD BEEN married, could I revert to being ‘Single’?”

I was told that no, I would never be deemed ‘Single’ again.

Interesting.

By their definition, there was no going back. If I had been married, I’d forever be UN-Married.

Until I UN-UN-Married.
