Turn Off The Lights So I Can See The Stars
I stepped outside this morning to feel a wonderful sharpness in the air. I was out for my early morning run and the skies were still dark. The air was so crisp that I could see the stars quite clearly.
As I ran around this quiet tree-lined business park, I tried to figure out what constellations I could see. I saw Orion’s belt and was wondering if a particular grouping of stars was the Big Dipper when I ran under a street light. The street light obscured the stars; the near light drowning out the distant light.
I realized that the hum of technology is the white noise that drowns out the natural world.
We can’t see the stars for the lights.
We can’t hear the wind for the engines.
We can’t see the mountains for the smog.
We can’t smell the flowers for the chemicals.
I like the convenience and comfort that technology allows.
I like the comfort that nature brings.
Sometimes I’d like to be able to turn off the lights so I can see the stars.
