A Slightly Different Car Commercial

Published by MsQ at 8:38 am under General

I was describing this car commercial I saw to a friend. The commercial had a car with a big red bow on top. It was parked on the street between 2 homes. Two men were looking at the car, each looking smugly at the other and arguing that the car was a gift for HIM.

My friend was a guy.

I was describing the commercial to him because I was amazed to see an ad for a big-ticket item for a man. Yes, the implication was that the wife had purchased this high-end car for her husband. Different.

Guy Friend: Oh. I remember that commercial. I had no idea what it was about.
Ms. Q: Really? It was 2 guys trying to one-up each other about getting a car for Christmas.
Guy Friend: Is that what it was about?
Ms. Q: Yeah. I didn’t see it from the start, but one guy was ribbing the other about having to clean out the garage to make space.
Guy Friend: Huh. I didn’t get it. But your explanation makes more sense than what I thought the commercial was about.
Ms. Q: What did you think it was about?
Guy Friend: Well, there were these 2 guys and a car with a big bow on it, I dunno, I thought maybe one guy was giving it to the other…I wasn’t paying that much attention.
Ms. Q: No wonder it didn’t make sense to you.
Guy Friend: I thought maybe it was a gay thing.
Ms. Q: Hah! The commercial was a bit “progressive” but it wasn’t THAT progressive!

My point is that the concept of a wife buying a car for a husband did not immediately leap to his mind. If the commercial had 2 women looking at the car, my friend would’ve gotten it right away. What I found interesting was he found a gay male couple more probable.

The commercial stood out because it wasn’t another mind-numbing display of a man giving jewelry to his wife.
