Empty Hands and a Full Heart

Today is Christmas and I haven’t purchased any gifts. I don’t need to. My family and friends all understand that the most valuable thing we can give each other is time.
This has been a very heavy travel year for me. I was on the road for work 75% of the time; I was away 3 out of every 4 weeks in a month. When I return, I need time alone. Even though I am alone in my hotel room after work, I am still at work. It’s only at home that I can really relax. When I return, I don’t have the emotional energy to socialize; I need to be alone with my own thoughts. Because of my heavy travel schedule, I haven’t seen much of my friends or family.
I’m not the only one who has been busy. Many of my friends work long hours all week and use the weekend to catch up on chores or spend time with family. This leaves maybe one free weekend day. Those free days get booked up quickly. When I get together with a friend, we end up planning several weeks in advance. The hours I can spend with a friend are few and far between and cherished.
What am I doing today? I’m spending time with family. We are sharing time together.
This is the best gift that we can give each other.
Spend time with people you love.
Unlike fruitcake, your time won’t last forever.
