Reality and Fantasy

Published by MsQ at 2:03 pm under Intermission

How many fantasies do you slip into throughout the day?

I’m sure you have more than you realize.

I’ll be driving in the city, slipping and sliding through the pinball traffic of darting cars, heaving buses and jaywalking pedestrians. If I get into The Zone, I’ll imagine I’m this hyper-cool racecar driver.

I’ll be running, effortlessly. I loose my sense of self and I feel timeless and connected and humble and powerful.

I’ll be listening to someone’s project plan, which will be littered with phrases like “aggressive schedule” or “contracted timeline” and when the speaker asks, “Any comments?”

I raise my hand and reply, “Stapling wings on a pig ain’t gonna make it fly. Throwing more people on this project ain’t gonna get it done on time.”

Sometimes I’ll actually feel like I look hot, like smoldering more-than-meets-the-eye HOT. I’ll spot the more-than-meets-the-eye guy reading “White Noise” sitting solo at Starbucks and imagine myself smoking him out from behind the table.

Passing fancies, mere whiffs of thought.

You’re waiting in the 10-items-or-less line and the person in front of you spreads out more than 10. You lean over and randomly toss items back into their basket until only 10 items are left.

What breaks from reality do you take?

while sitting in LA traffic for an hour to travel 3 miles, I use the fantasy of winning the lotto and thinking about how I would spend the money . . . charities for tax shelters, a fleet of white mercedes (every model they make) for my staff, personal chef, personal golf course . . . etc

Yeah, I see what you did there!

Gary: better to have such a nice soothing fantasy when stuck in traffic instead of experiencing road rage! Stuck in traffic? Another good reason to Work From Home!

dietrologia: we’re all so much more than meets the eye.

I slip into the fantasy of blasting away all the cars in front of me with a death ray when I get stuck in traffic on the way to work. I also slip into fantasies whenever my eyes spot a pretty woman. But I can’t go any further in describing those. LOL!

Gary: Yes, I have thought about the threaded comments plugin but it never seemed worthwhile before – I didn’t have that many comments! I’ll rethink this. Sometimes I get tired of tweaking the blog – I just want to write!

Ricardo: I used to have the traffic fantasy of driving the “Speed Racer” cartoon car that had these hydraulics that lifted the car so it could drive over all the other cars. My mom’s stuck-in-traffic fantasies are similar to yours in their violence. Her version involves a tank and just mashing everyone down who’s in her way.

Tiny, easily irritated elderly Chinese woman in a tank – freaky shit! Or more accurately – Seriously Freaky Shit!

When it comes to being attracted to someone – well, we all have our fantasies about THAT! Or as my mom says, “I’m OLD, I’m not DEAD.”
