An Appreciation Of Beauty For All the Senses

Sight, Touch, Smell, Taste, and Hearing are what allow us to connect to the world.

The world is filled with beauty, beauty for every sense. I thought I’d share with you some of what I find beautiful.

Sight

  • The curve of a duck’s cheek
  • Big fat acorns
  • Buds, tight with bloom. Beautiful potential.
  • Bright moss on a bare branch
  • The luminosity of flowers on overcast days.
  • Black ink on heavy white paper.
  • Dragonfly wings.
  • The night sky awash with stars seen far from the city, seen from within the dark cloak of nature.

Touch

  • Peeling the skin off an orange, the tiny fibrous tugging and releasing. Funny how peeling an orange can sound like footsteps.
  • The swirl and tug of ocean waves around my legs.
  • Coming in from the cold and changing clothes – those clothes never felt so comfortable.
  • A hot shower after working out.
  • A cool breeze on my hot skin.
  • The glide of a pen on heavy paper.
  • Warm hands holding my cold ones.
  • Drying off with freshly laundered fluffy towels.
  • Dipping my hands into a stream.

Smell

  • The air is cool, dawn is on its way and yet you know it’ll be a hot day.
  • Peanut butter on toast
  • The scent of soap on a lover’s skin.
  • Fresh brewed coffee, roasted coffee beans
  • Fresh sawn wood.
  • The ocean.
  • A hint of jasmine on a warm night, carried on a breeze.

Taste

  • Freshly ground pepper.
  • A great cup of coffee
  • The layers of flavors in a good red wine.
  • Bittersweet chocolate
  • Fresh squeezed lemon on steamed broccoli
  • Blue cheese and walnuts.

Sound

  • The thrumming of rain on a tin roof
  • The cry of a hawk.
  • Birdsong in the morning.
  • The wind through high grass.
  • The hush of new-fallen, heavy snow.
  • Waves crashing against the rocks.
  • The surf rolling against the shore.
  • Hearing breakfast being made while laying in bed.

Feelings – The Union of the Senses

  • The unfolding of my heart when a man I’m just beginning to get to know unexpectedly holds my hand for the first time
  • The look of total trust that dogs can give you.
  • A child’s delight.
  • The look of tender vulnerability when I tell my mom I love her.
  • A hand sliding down the curve of my naked hip, breath on the back of my neck followed by a kiss, the arm of my love pulling me close to him. (Spooning)
  • Calling a friend when you’re in need and …there they are.
  • Showing your imperfections and being accepted.
  • Hearing breakfast being made while lying in bed.
  • Warm hands holding my cold ones.
  • Discovering and rediscovering the contours of my love’s body.

Sight, Touch, Smell, Taste, and Hearing are what allow us to connect to the world.

Feelings, the union of all five senses, allow us to connect to people.

Why don’t you share with us what your five senses find beautiful?

Why don’t you tell us what touches your heart?

Leave a comment or post your own thoughts.

Or just silently remember all that you find beautiful.

Update:

Irisi from Ruminations has posted Feasting the Senses – what pleases her five senses as well as her heart.  Why don’t you read her post and share in her pleasure?

This is a lovely post…. I can appreciate all these things, and reading them reminded me. It made me very happy :)

I may have to write something similar.

    Take care!

Irisi: I re-read the post after receiving your comment – it made me feel good all over again! I can see why so many self improvement, positive thinking and self-help books recommend writing down what you enjoy, your goals, what’s important. Writing helps to connect feelings to mind.

I hope you post something similar – I’d love to read it (and link to it to share!)
