Christmas Memories
I love Christmas songs.

Jingle Bells, Winter Wonderland, chestnuts roasting, nothing stirring…
I haven’t had a Christmas tree in years but I recall the glittery twinkly tinsely wonder I had at the Christmas tree we put up when I was a kid.
A REAL tree.
With REAL tinsel (almost like aluminum foil) that mom saved (neatly) year after year.
Dad would buy a Silver Tip tree from some corner lot and out would come the multi-colored miniature lights and the fragile glass ornaments.
Now that I think about it, we didn’t have much money but dad would buy this pricey real tree and I’m not sure how he managed it.
Christmas was great for me. Mom loved dressing me up which was part fun and part torture. The fun part was knowing I looked just adorable in my little velvet dress, white tights and black patent Mary Janes.
The torture was the endless photos of me being told to look adorable.
I’d really load up during Christmas – I got lots of cash in those little red envelopes as well as toys and of course the less favored clothing.
What I didn’t like was getting Barbie. She seemed very odd to me. So of course I bended her every whichway. I was more of a stuffed animal person, heavy on the stuffed rabbits.
I would count up the presents and I’d have over 20!! Nothing like having a gazillion relatives, doting grandparents and the adorable thing going on.
Don’t let kids fool you – they know dang well when they are adorable, especially the girls. I was a much better flirt then than I am now.
I was more of a kid during Christmas than at any time of year – I got more attention, I had more wonder and more hope that good things were coming. The aftermath of saving the wrapping paper and the tinsel and carefully storing everything wasn’t so much fun but wearing my Dr. Dentons and skidding around the hardwood floors in those footed PJs…total kidshtuff!
Christmas songs make me smile.
So my collection of Christmas music is out and you know what that means …
Podcast alert!!
Are you ready for a sing-along?? A little Christmas caroling?
It’s been a while since I’ve uh, sung so whaddya think?
Any requests?
Or maybe you’re thinking …
“Please…no singing…I promise I’ll be good…”
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
I love the classics … how about “Jingle Bells.”
Delmer: Hmm. I’ll think on it. Whaddya think of “Jingle Bell Rock” ?? hehehe
Alright!!!!!!!
I can’t wait … are you singing now??
Christmas past for me was very much an explosion of gifts, people, and food. Two solid days of it. My family is much smaller now … I often think back to my childhood and just how much I adored the holidays.
… such a cute picture MsQ!
Speedy!! (uno and dos): I’ll be singing soooon. Ready for a duet?? hehehe!! And thanks for the compliment – well.. I was pretty adorable!!
Any Christmas song requests? I’m thinking of Jingle Bell Rock..The Christmas Song…maybe “Home For Christmas”…
Your fans are begging you!
I simply LOVE Christmas Music. So Very Much. There is something so uplifting about it.
My son is sick of it already but he knows he has another few weeks of listening to me sing it and play it in my car!!
Jake: hahaha! Fans! Thanks.
meleah: I have all the classic versions (Bing Crosby, Dean Martin, Nat King Cole) plus other Christmas albums like Diana Krall. One of my favorites is the Dean Martin one something like “Christmas Romance” – cute! Yeah, Christmas songs are so uplifting because they are comfy-cozy.
You sing, too? Podcast! Podcast! Well..you have done video so YouTube! YouTube!!
I just came back from a holiday affair and was blasted with christmas music so it is fresh in my head. My guess is your father had a cash stash that he would bust out for the holidays. Some people, no matter how difficult it may be to make ends meet, go all out on this time of year because it means a lot to them. I think your father wanted this time to be special so he splurged a little. Good for you all.
Now, that is a wonder picture of the jr Ms.Q. I would not dare put any little kid pics of me up so kudos to your courage. then again I don’t have pictures of me from that far back so I am saved, I think.
I love Rober Earl Keen – Merry Christmas from the Family (which starts out “Mom got drunk & dad got drunk, at our Christmas party…). And Jackson Brown – The Rebel Jesus. And I love Brent Dennon’s version of “The Holidays are Here and We’re Still at War”. And one that I think is SO SO pretty is Sinead O’Connor – I Believe in You. I like Oh Holly Night too.
Such a cute picture! I don’t have any memories like that, I guess ’cause we didn’t do Christmas, my mom wasn’t into portraits. And I’m wearing a t-shirt or whatever in most of my school photos. I know there’s a photo of me on facebook somewhere dressed up for like a cousin’s wedding or something, but getting dressed up was not very common for me I guess. Hmmmm…no wonder Razor can never get me to dress up. I’m like the opposite of “You can dress her up but you can’t take her out”. But then again, you take your chances taking me out too…
“It’s Beginning to Look a lot like Christmas…” is a song that is in my head. Not sure if that is the exact title. But its one that always stuck. I’m not even a Christmas person but I’m feeling the season of friendly cheer this time around.
What ever you pick I’m sure will be quite entertaining.
Ricardo: I didn’t feel it was particularly brave of me to post a photo of me as a kid but thanks for thinking so! Can you tell it’s me?
Jill: Well…I dunno any of the first 3 songs you mentioned. And I’m fairly old school so even “I saw mama kissing Santa Claus” is like…uh..sacriligeous or something. I do have one by The Roches (?) – a Joysie version of Winter Wonderland (another fave) but because it’s a fave, I can’t bear to hear, “Gown awaaay is the blooboid…here to staaay is a new boid..”
I’ll have to see if I can find that Sinead one – I do love her voice.
Thanks for the compliment on my cuteness. I haven’t changed much – hahahaha! My mom took photos of me obssessively. It took me a while to get my own camera and enjoy taking photos. But I do have literally thousands of photos of me as a kid.
UT: Oh, that’s a nice song. I think you got the title right.
“Entertaining” is good way to put it! As opposed to “Uh..what have I done to deserve this?”
Your pick was perfect
Speedy!! Glad you like!
I know it’s too late, but I’ve just got to bring this one up – Grandma got run over by a reindeer!
